Paris will be more expensive for travelers in 2024
Visiting Paris is going to be a little more expensive, since the city raised taxes on hotels and other accommodations at the beginning of the year.
The increase, which came into effect on January 1, will charge travelers up to almost 200% more in overnight taxes for staying in 2024, Skift reported. The increase in tax varies depending on the type of accommodation.
The largest increase is for travelers staying in "palaces". Those tourists will have to pay a night tax of 14.95 euros ($16.38), which represents an increase of 199% over the 2023 rate, of 5 euros (5.48 dollars).
Travelers staying in 5-star hotels will have to pay a night fee of 10.73 euros (11.75 dollars), which is an increase of 186% compared to the 2023 rate of 3.75 euros (4.11 dollars), and travelers staying in 4-star hotels will have to pay a new fee of 8.13 euros (8.91 dollars), which is an increase of 182% compared to the 2023 rate of 2.88 euros (3.15 dollars).
Travelers staying in 1-star hotels, holiday villages, guest rooms or hostels will have a more modest increase with the new rate of 2.60 euros ($2.85), compared to the 2023 rate of 1 euro ($1.10).
A representative of Atout France, the country's tourism development agency, did not immediately respond to a request for comments from Travel + Leisure.
The decision to raise the rates comes months before the expected Olympic Games in Paris. Hotel prices have skyrocketed on the eve of the Games, with an average of more than 300% of normal for this summer. In total, Paris expects to receive more than 11 million visitors on the occasion of the Games, which begin on July 26.
Paris is not the only city that has raised taxes. Amsterdam has also approved an increase in the tourist tax for this year, which will force visitors to pay 12.5%. The tax will be applied to both travelers who spend the night and those traveling on a cruise.
